Position Summary Information

Job Summary

The University began implementing the “Regis Rising” strategic plan in 2014, a bold strategic plan for the future. The strategic plan serves as the basis for the $150 million “Ignite” Comprehensive Campaign, which has been approved by the Board of Trustees and is currently in the “Silent Phase” of operations.

University Advancement views its work as essential and sacred, building meaningful relationships and inspiring philanthropy on behalf of Regis University. As a member of the advancement team, the Director of Foundation Giving plays a key role in the identification and engagement of new foundation funding partners. This individual will be a skilled fundraiser, strong communicator and a person who works collaboratively with and through others to achieve success.

“Ignite” addresses the fundraising needs of the University’s five colleges – Regis College, Rueckert-Hartman College for Health Professions, College of Business and Economics, College of Computer and Information Sciences and College of Contemporary Liberal Studies.

As such, this position will cultivate and manage foundation relationships, execute strategies for the successful engagement and ultimate solicitation of foundation prospects as it relates to all five colleges of Regis University. He/she is expected to work independently to be self-motivated in initiating contacts with foundation prospects. The Director of Foundation Giving will also be expected to work in a collegial manner with university leaders and the Advancement team in creating and implementing strategies and goal setting designed to achieve annual fundraising and activity goals.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop foundation solicitation strategies that meet the priority fundraising needs of the university. As part of the solicitation process, facilitate good communication and access between foundations and the university. Develop and maintain foundation relationships to meet university funding priorities. Identify, cultivate, and solicit philanthropic partnerships with foundations committed to research in order to develop strategies for mutual benefit.

• Serve as the primary manager for a portfolio of foundation prospects. The goal is to understand foundations’ interests and to develop complementary engagement strategy and subsequently proposals for major gifts of $50,000 and above. Determine specific purpose and level of partnership and identify those to be involved in cultivation and subsequent solicitation.

• Discuss, coordinate, and pursue foundation funding objectives, articulated by development, deans, and administrators, with designated major gift/unit advancement directors, trustees, the president, and other University administrators.

• Write proposals and complete grant applications, collaborating with faculty and other staff in Advancement.

• Coordinate effective foundation site visits (on and off campus) involving university administration, trustees, deans, and faculty.

• Maintain an effective program of stewardship of foundation partners, including initiating and writing timely and accurate grant reports.

• Work with the research team to prepare briefings on key prospects and to write descriptions of suggested funding opportunities that will lead to compelling proposals.

• Professionally and positively represent the Advancement office as a first-class, effective, and successful operation to all outside constituencies, including foundations, university units, and central administration.

• Maintain project/prospect status reports for the Advancement office.

• Plan, develop, and implement effective foundation giving Advancement department procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required. At least three years of successful, direct experience in advancement/development in a university setting, including solicitation of major foundation gifts, or five or more years of experience in sales, marketing, planning, research, manufacturing, or engineering in a technology-based corporation.

• Excellent business communication and presentation skills, both written and oral, are essential.

• Experience in managing a varied and extensive portfolio of projects. Ability to work under pressure of deadlines and fundraising goals, is mandatory. Consistent production of a high quantity and quality of work is required in this position.

• Knowledge of and commitment to the role of a Jesuit, private, comprehensive university in the system of higher education.

• Ability to travel for work is required, as well as work involving evening and weekends.

Skills/abilities:

• Determine how best to develop and maintain effective relationships with foundation partners and determine when and how a foundation can be successfully solicited for a gift. This includes the ability to think strategically and creatively. Must relate to and understand the needs and interests of foundations in order to develop relationships between them and the university and to determine how to market to that foundation with compelling benefits.

• Ability to promote the university’s fundraising and strategic priorities by developing excellent working relations with faculty, senior academic leaders, senior foundation leaders, and advancement colleagues.

• Demonstrated leadership and the ability to successfully manage multi-functional or diverse relationships.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree is highly desirable.
