Position Summary Information

Job Summary

The Assistant Professor of Rhetoric & Communications will support the work of teaching and learning for rhetorical proficiency within the First Year Experience (FYE) and in the broader curriculum.

The primary focus of this position is the foundational core—our Fall first-year writing seminar and a connected seminar in the Spring emphasizing oral communication and laying a foundation for communication across the curriculum. As a part of this primary focus, an ideal candidate will be prepared to teach in the Commitment Program, a program within the FYE which contributes to the success of traditionally underrepresented and underserved students at Regis; in addition, an ideal candidate will have experience with holistic advising and mentoring of students from diverse backgrounds. Outside of the foundational core, this position offers avenues for teaching in our signature Integrative Core, in our integrative programs (Catholic Studies, Environmental Studies, Peace and Justice Studies, and Women’s and Gender Studies) and in course offerings which support rhetoric and communication across the curriculum (such as our Conflict Management certificate program).

Because the FYE is the first contact faculty and staff have with our incoming students, the Assistant Professor of Rhetoric & Communication Studies will contribute to FYE and campus-wide collaboration towards an environment which is both welcoming and intellectually engaging, an environment which fosters success for all our new students. As a member of the FYE Advisory Board, this faculty member will be a key contributor to shared oversight and assessment of curricular outcomes, offering particular expertise in outcomes connected to rhetorical proficiency both within the FYE and across the curriculum. In addition, this faculty member will play a leadership role in FYE efforts to offer robust, on-going faculty development relevant to teaching rhetoric across a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds and preparation, with a particular focus on deliberative dialogue. Finally, we are seeking a scholar-teacher with an strong interest in and capacity for a research program in Communication Studies or the Scholarship in Teaching and Learning or both, that is, a research program which can serve to enhance the programmatic efforts described above.

This tenure-track hire in Regis College at the level of Assistant Professor is a 10 month position, which includes the 9 months of the academic year and a month of advising, planning, and assessment during the summer. Salary is competitive and commensurate with education and experience.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Candidates for this position will have not only a demonstrated capacity for excellent teaching, but also strong experience in the kinds of programmatic work which sustain such teaching (in particular, we have a strong interest in applicants who have practical experience facilitating dialogue in academic and non-academic contexts).

Responsibilities:
• Teach within the first two years for employment a 3-2 course load per year, thereafter a 2-2 course load as the faculty member assumes greater programmatic responsibilities and stronger leadership role in areas of professional expertise.
• Develop and implement faculty development workshops for teaching rhetoric and communication within the FYE and across the curriculum (i.e., the pedagogy of group discussion, group work and oral presentation). Offer pedagogical support for new FYE faculty through class observation and mentoring. Help to create and maintain a digital repository of programmatic materials as well as curricular models and best practices for teaching rhetoric and communication.
• Participate in the FYE Advisory Council’s work to ensure high-impact learning for our students so that we deliver the programming and education students expect when they matriculate to Regis. Contribute to the work of that same Advisory Council to assess student, faculty and programmatic outcomes.
• Collaborate closely with Director of the First-Year Experience, the Director of Student Support and other stakeholders in making inclusive excellence a key element of our way of proceeding.

Minimum Qualifications

• Commitment to the values of a Jesuit, liberal arts education.
• Conferred PhD in Communications or Communication Studies.
• At least three years of full-time collegiate teaching experience or comparable work experience.
• Proven experience and leadership in program development and operations.
• Understanding of the principles, procedures, and best practices involved in faculty development for teaching rhetoric and communication.
• Demonstrated ability to collect, analyze, and assess data related to student success, student learning outcomes, and program effectiveness.
• Ability to work with students of varying academic skill levels to provide support during this year of transition. Knowledge of how to manage student activities such that an atmosphere appropriate to learning is achieved.
• Ability to provide the students with the academic tools needed to persist and have a successful university experience.
• Ability to communicate and to collaborate effectively with students, faculty and staff and to incorporate those skills into the courses they teach to provide direction in the classroom.
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and flexibility.
• Ability to work with teams as well as independently.
• Professionalism in dress, manner, behavior, and communication. Sound judgment and diplomacy in interpreting Regis College and University policy in absence of supervisor. Confidentiality and loyalty to the University and to the Regis mission.
• Accurate keyboarding/typing. Moderate level of computer experience using Microsoft Office for Windows. Exceptional knowledge of appropriate grammar, spelling, punctuation, and usage in writing and speaking the English language.
